| It is in VF that basic fatalism holds the seed of hope. This is clearly due to the inherent romanticism of Fenech’s despair – a Keatsian situation updated. No matter how frustrated he is or despairing of the human condition, he always manages to infuse a glimpse of better things, even at his most ironical… His piece de resistance is undoubtedly “Dawra Durella”, a form of elegy at the Addolorata – the delicate touches of changing mood, the veiled cynicism, the inverted thought, the persistent thought of and attempt at celebration, the ultimate disillusion, the hope-and-despair syndrome. Fenech’s frequent earthy connotations often raise his fatalism to a romantic conception of decayed beauty. In these days of harsh words and atonality, Fenech’s poems achieve a liltingly melodious nuance that, wedded to themes and ideas that are nothing if not harsh, is most intriguing. Is this unique in our poetry, I wonder? |

| Indeed I have no hesitation in saying that this volume of poetry contains at least two highly significant contributions to Maltese Poetry even from the point of view of traditionalism – Camilleri’s Ġuda and Fenech’s Dawra Durella. Furthermore each of the four poets has produced some lyrics of merit…Fenech in this respect being certainly outstanding. |

| Fenech għandu viżjoni sintetika tal-fatti. Il-fatti għalih, imqar meta huma koroh, għandhom tifsira li tgħaqqadhom. Din il-konvinzjoni, li tidher sikwit fil-versi ta’ Fenech, teffettwa ruħha, fuq il-livell poetiku, fi gradazzjoni ta’ ħsibijiet. Fenech jibni kull parti tal-konoxxenza u l-esperjenza tiegħu b’mod analitiku u meqjus. Għalhekk, fi studju sintetiku tal-poeżiji ta’ Fenech, konna nkunu nistgħu nħollu biċċa biċċa l-versi tiegħu u nsibu r-rabta u l-arkitettura unitarja li hi l-bażi tar-riżultat li Fenech irid jasal għalih. Il-poeżija tiegħu hi organika u mal-ordni mentali tgħaqqad l-ekwilibriju formali. |
