Hekk din il-kollezzjoni ta’ ħajku toħroġ bħala tour de force tal-ħajja u t-twemmin tal-awtur…Il-konċiżjoni, il-mod dirett u, fl-istess ħin, l-immaġni ta’ f’daqqa li jħaddem Fenech fil-poeżija tiegħu, jagħmluh poeta adattat għall-kitba tal-ħajku, l-aktar meta jiddeskrivi u jiddefendi n-natura kontra l-ħerba li qed jgħaddiha minnha l-bniedem modern. My own favourites are his nature poems where he often manages that distillation of high imagination with simplicity of image which is the essence of the haiku and, in my view, its true beauty…This is highly evocative poetry. Evocative also, but in a different way, are several pieces that refer to his own existential reflections, many of which are, as is not unusual with his writing, heavily tinged with irony.

His introduction to this last section reveals the extent of his interest in the technique of haiku. He is not content to write pieces of 17 syllables (5-7-5) but tries to follow the fusion of description and meditation found in the classical models, and to limit himself (there are a few exceptions) to the classical themes of nature, love, parting, time and death. He is too modest, I know, to claim he can ever vie with the great Japanese haikuists, but at his best Fenech, like his models, can dazzle us with a beautifully concrete image, or, better still, fuse the image and the reflection.
